HFS Bank, F.S.B., was originally chartered in 1934 as a federal savings and loan association. In July of 1993 HFS amended its charter to a federal stock savings bank and the name was changed from Hobart Federal Savings and Loan Association to HFS Bank. The bank's deposits are insured by the Savings Association Insurance Association as administered by the Federal Deposit Insurance Company. The bank's primary business is the promotion of savings through the solicitation of deposits from the general public, and the promotion of home ownership through the origination of mortgage loans for the purchase, construction or improvement of residential real estate. The bank also originates nonmortgage loans such as automobile, commercial and personal loans.
The first branch office of HFS was opened in 1979 at Willowcreek and Route 6 in Portage. The Griffith branch located between the library and the post office at 926 N. Broad Street opened it doors in 1990. In 1994 HFS added a branch office in Crown Point at 114 N. Main Street, and the newest office opened in 1998 at 5200 Central Avenue in Portage.
HFS converted to a stock institution in 1985. There are over 1,800,000 shares of HFS stock outstanding at the current time, and approximately 320 registered shareholders. Additional shareholders hold stock in "street" name through various brokerage firms, and are not reflected in the 320.
